In this case the SKS was probably the best choice.
Btw. In 1958 soviet regulations still saw soldiers armed with SKS as something normal. Also, in some less important and training units, the SKS was in use in 1970’s (at least for recruit training).

The Soviets started phasing them out in the mid 1950’s, so I would have expected them to be using a Kalashnikov variant instead.
