Yak-40K is a new modification of Yak-40 aircraft (“Codling” – according to the NATO codification), passenger plane developed in the USSR in the 1960s. They say it was rather popular in Latin America, especially among drug lords who appreciated its ability to take off from unpaved runways.

I flew hundreds of times in my childhood in one of these. I seemed the most beautiful and safe aircraft. A few years later the same plane had a horrible accident in the Bay of my city.

do you have an issue with aeroplanes?

  3. Jim Beam says:

Does this plane have any 21 century avionics like GPS? I didn’t see anything such in the cockpit. Or they fly by vision only, like in the glorious 60s?

You doesn’t need GPS when you have a radiomagnetometer, compass and airspeed indicators. GPS only turned the navigation easier, in the past planes traversed the ocean without GPS!

So what is exactly the modification carried out to turn a Yak-40 into a Yak-40K? All the avionics look like vintage stuff.

  5. j pigden says:

I assume the upgrade is for the cabin interior not the cockpit.

  6. Mummeli says:

-K mod = remove the chairs from the cabin, and add posters on the walls?
