Road is Closed: Jets Are Landing

Posted on April 18, 2013 by tim

This is what literary drivers could here from the police officers closed the road in Belarus a few days ago. They were getting it pretty serious - a few fighter jet and heavy bombers were landing directly on the highway as well as some support helicopters. All in the effort of making a special air force drills.

The interstate highway system in the US was also built for military purposes. At regular intervals the highways are be straight and flat enough to operate as runways. Now you know why they’re so BORING to drive on.

Auxiliary airfields are needed especially during war time.

Pls take a look at the flag on the helicopter (foto # 19) . It’s not a russian airforce, but actually belarusian. Don’t be fools.

I wonder if A-10, F-15, F-16 is able to do this on US highways?

very good point i dont know if the US has used the idea of special strips of highway reinforced and with the right parking places on the side. It was a very ‘soviet’ thing to do but i also know sweden has the same policy in place and France to i think.

Yes, the the aircraft listed are very capable of STOL on a highway in the US. There also several other aircraft that can. Although when they do it, there is rarely any press around or anybody with a camera to see it…. usually there is an “accident” that closes the road or they use a section of a base highway, drop the portable approach markers and tada…. instant runway. Most of the time pilots do not really need Glide Slope indicator… I have landed at several airports that do not even have them. Have a great day.

The United States Interstate highway system was General Eisenhower’s idea, based on the German Autobahn system. Interstates have low grades, no real “curvy” roads, and are typically wide enough to land airplanes. Also built for military convoy travel.

In Sweden it’s in their military doctrine to operate from roads, so why not in Belarus?
