The Military Unit That Does Not Function Anymore

    11
Posted on October 9, 2012 by team

The USSR left a lot of objects which are abandoned today. This one is another military unit with a helicopter base. You are not going to see any helicopters though. Look what remains to listen to the silence when people leave.

Here is what has remained from the radars.

    This is a runway.

Some signs are shown on the poster.

This was a garage for the fire truck.

    This is a guardroom.

Most of the bunkers on the territory have been plundered.

They had their own weather station.

The only way to get there is to climb up on the wire.

We are inside the command bunker.

    The book is called “Telescopes”.

It seems as if you are in some submarine.

    The sign writes “planetary gear”.

It says: “Under the banner of Lenin – for the renovation and prosperity of the USSR”.

    This was a gym.

    These flats are rather small.

    Now we enter the lighthouse.

The observation site is 56 meters (183 ft) high.

Doesn’t it look like some exclusion zone?

Why it does not say anywhere that it is in Latvia?

p.s. been there, done that, and the radio telescope is not abandoned, it still functions.

The radio telescope looks in working condition, instruments are intact, the gear is oiled and (mainly) electrical equipment is not stolen. Question is who needs this ancient technology, either for research or military use?

This abandoned runway could be nicely used for superlights or model airplanes, there is always a second chance for such installations!

That’d be a nice boat for someone who owns a paint scraper. :)
