15 Beyond the Polar Circle

Beyond the Polar Circle

Only 4 hours flight from St. Petersburg and you find yourself in such a different place beyond the Polar Circle.

Sometimes winters here are -50C (-58F) cold. Since the Soviet time the city has been rather industrial. Much rare metal such as nickel has been extracted right near the city.

Many flats are offered for sale.

It’s the place that can be left only by plane. No other transportation means can help…

Does anyone live here? Probably someone does according to the new glass units…

Norilsk is full of expensive SUVs and there is an awesome gourmet food variety, including rare fishes. There are plenty of foreigners in the hotel and visiting the local museums.

Location: Norilsk

I was interested in this comment at the last photo: “There are plenty of foreigners in the hotel and visiting the local museums”. I read on the internet that this city is closed to foreigners.

Most likely they’re “Approved” business people playing tourists in their spare time.

Norilsk is a special permit zone I think. you cannot go there with a standard visa.

  10. I am from northern regions of Russia and having lived in a few northern places I’d say don’t try going there, it’s a waste of health and money. U crazy? For a taste of desolation go to alaskan ghost towns. There’s one just outside of Palmer called Matanuska.
