7 New Way to Utilize Ammunition

New Way to Utilize Ammunition

Posted on July 12, 2012 by team

We are at the presentation of a new way of ammunition utilization at Pogonovo polygon in the Voronezh region. When they started to use “Destroyer” R-40 device they could achieve practically noiseless utilization.

The Voronezh land is finally quiet. The old way of ammunition utilization by explosion caused a lot of troubles for local villagers. Glasses of their houses cracked and broke. The new way of utilization is safe for the polygon staff and doesn’t make the locals nervous.

Applying the new technology up to 40 tons of ammunition is utilized daily and they plan to increase this amount twice. In 2012 they want to destroy 300 kilotons of ammunition on the territory of the Western district (compare: the power of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima was 15 kilotons “only”).

The principle of the “Destroyer” is based on the shaped-charged effect. There is some amount of explosives in the device, inside it has a concave copper lens. After filling the lens turns into a plasma ball that burns the sides of ammunition.

The remaining metal cover is sent for remelting. At such a way of utilization detonation doesn’t happen at all and practically there are no debris.

Everything is ready for defusing of 125mm shells. Waiting for a signal from the firing control station.

Shell hole.

2 m pipes are 122mm missiles of the valley fire system “Grad”. Now everything is ready for solid-fueled engines launch.

The shell was exploded as a whole, an engine and a warhead detonated. Now powder just burns out and a warhead is utilized by the “Destroyer”.

Yes, basically the warhead of an RPG7, triggered electrically. The same system is called ‘dragons breath’ and is used to destroy mines and IEDs.

Those engines gave a pretty funky if a bit short display. Would love to know the expletives used afterwards.
