I see parallels from the 19th century in both the U.S. and Russia. In the U.S.: the transcendentalists (Emerson, Thoreau, others) and the Utopians. In Russia: the nihilists, the youthful “to the people” movement of the 1870s, the Molokans, and the wandering pilgrims. These particular people seem to be predominately Beat.

Honestly, I’m glad that the hippie movement happened. Because it meant that I was raised to ignore my mom who was trying to raise me to fear girls and think that any one of them could be sluts and carrying diseases.
Um, no thanks. That was effectively what the pre-hippie 1960s society was telling EVERYONE back then. All the while when most of Western Europe were becoming more modernised and ‘swinging’ while America Tv made great pains to show married couples sleeping in two different beds.
