Photography was a serious event in an ordinary person’s life. Look at any 19th century photography from any land and count the smiles… you won’t find many…(in addition, the toll of tooth decay-pre-fluoridation- and CULTURE precluded many people from showing their teeth)
I love these interpretations, but no, they weren’t dead-serious bc of their hard-knock life.
The exposure time was just too long to maintain a smile on your face for such a long time, os it was required to look more or less neutral.
There is an eery feeling to look at the photoes
knowing that all these beuatiful high school girls
are long gone…horrible Civil War, WW2, famines.
Some faces are so familiar…girls next door.
Russian girls always beautiful…..
Almost all intelligent and educated people were killed by the Bolsheviks.
