No, they were doomed to failure from the start. They were a communist nation, communism doesn’t work.
That’s why almost ALL previous communist nations are going to the capitalist system. The ones that are not (venezuela and north korea and cuba etc..) are failing badly.

Communism fails almost everywhere, except the smallest of places, even then it’s “iffy”.

It seems that capitalism doesn’t work either. But it gets big first. And then it fails against the spell “too big to fail”. I mean, humanity doen’t work, and the reason for this that people hate each other, they begin with drawing the line “aliens” vs’ “us”. And do everything to make the opponent to fail. Communism in USSR wouldn’t fail if it wasn’t fro US doing all the dirty war against it. US and USSR were not enemies after WWII. It was then that capitalists got afraid of USSR’s society development model, the competition was so fierce that USA had to raise the standards of life for the workers, so the children in Pennsylvania didn’t have to die in the coal mines for a very little pay.

KPSS members never numbered over 20 million. Anyone who passed the academic entry exams could get in, irrelevant of their parents ideological beliefs. You need to get your facts sorted out.

“At least today all you need is money”, How many ordinary, bright people can afford to pay the outrageous fees charged today.

the global recession proves that capitalism is a failure too. socialism failed because there was no democracy. democracy is the oxygen for socialism.
