1 Raft Of Plastic Bottles

Raft Of Plastic Bottles

Posted on March 22, 2012 by

These guys didn’t know what to do on vacation so they decided to make a raft using a few boards and a bunch of plastic bottles to set out on a voyage.

In the background you can see sacks full of plastic bottles. They paid about $7 to a couple of local homeless people to have them collected. There are about 1,500 empty plastic bottles there.

They drilled their boards and then used bolts and screws.

They packed their bottles into sacks and figured out their raft had a load-carrying ability of 2 tons which was enough for the people (about 400 kg) and the raft itself (350 kg).

They numbered each part of the raft and disassembled it to transport to the Don. When assembled, the raft was impossible to transport.

Their raft.

They had to make a wheel but they were too tired after spending the entire day in the sun so they wanted to make it work for at least one day.

The next day some of them headed to the forest to cut some trees to make poles while others stayed to think over a tent.

They decided to make it simple. They just drilled four holes in the raft to install beach umbrellas.

It was time to load food and water.

The raft sagged in the middle because they didn’t have enough plastic bottles. The wheel looked reliable.

They attached two rubber boats to the sides of their raft (just in case) and put their cameras, cellphones and tents in there.

This was to be their home for another 5-6 days.

The square raft was twirling on the water and it took them some time to figure out what to do about it.

They had catfish for dinner. It was a present from local fishermen. The men covered 150 km by water in 5.5 days (or 40 km by land). They spent just $7 for the bottles while the rest of the construction material was available for free (one of them was building a house). Now the raft is kept in their garage waiting for another trip. Next time they want to use twelve 200-liter plastic bottles instead of 1.5-liter ones. We’ll see what happens!

A grand adventure for these young men. Note no civilians were bombed or massacred during the making of this raft.
