20 Soviet And Russian Space Programs

Soviet And Russian Space Programs

Posted on March 17, 2012 by

According to Head of the Russian Federal Space Agency V. Popovkin, it is likely that Russian cosmonauts will land on the Moon by 2020. Citizens of the Russian Federation, engineers or doctors by education, may apply for the program to be selected for the expedition. The Russian Federal Space Agency also announced its plans to build research stations on Mars. All that is yet to happen in future so why not look back into the past to see what space programs the Soviet Union and Russia had.

On October 4th, 1957 Soviet Sputnik-1 was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, to become the first artificial satellite to be put into Earth orbit and trigger a space race between the USSR and the USA.

On November 3rd, 1957 Sputnik-2 became the second spacecraft launched into Earth orbit and the first to carry a living animal, a dog named Laika. Laika died a few hours later from overheating and stress (in 1957 it was announced the dog died 6 days after the launch).

On August 19th, 1960 the dogs named Belka and Strelka spent one day in space and safely returned to Earth.

On April 12th, 1961 Yuri Gagarin became the first human to journey into outer space. He spent there 1 hour 48 minutes.

Vostok-1 launches from the Baikonur Cosmodrome with Y. Gagarin aboard.

Nikita Khrushchev gives a hug to cosmonauts G. Titov and Y. Gagrin after 25-year old Titov became the second human to travel into outer space. He spent 25 hours there. Titov remains the world’s youngest cosmonaut to travel into outer space.

On June 16th, 1963 Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to travel into space. A second woman was sent to space just after 19 years. It was S. Savitskaya.

On March 18th, 1965 Alexey Leonov became the first human to conduct a spacewalk.

On February 3rd, 1966 Luna-9, an unmanned spacecraft, became the first spacecraft to achieve a soft landing on the Moon to transmit photographic data to Earth.

Widow Komarova gives a kiss to her husband’s portrait during his funeral held on Red Square in Moscow on April 26th, 1967. Vladimir Komarov’s spaceflight on Soyuz-1 made him the first cosmonaut to fly into outer space more than once, and he became the first human to die during a spaceflight—when the Soyuz-1 space capsule crashed after re-entry on April 24th, 1967.

Soviet scientists examine two turtles that returned to earth after their journey to the Moon, 1968.

On November 17th, 1970 Lunokhod-1 became the first roving remote-controlled robot landed on the Moon.

Venera-9 was a USSR unmanned space mission to Venus. It consisted of an orbiter and a lander. It was launched on June 8th, 1975. The orbiter was the first spacecraft to orbit Venus, while the lander was the first to return images from the surface of another planet.

Soviet cosmonaut Alexey Leonov and American astronaut Thomas Stafford shake hands as their two space ships performed successful docking on July 17th, 1975.

On July 25th, 1984 Svetlana Savitskaya became the first woman to conduct a spacewalk.

Mir was a space station operated in low Earth orbit from 1986 to 2001, at first by the Soviet Union and then by Russia.

1987-1988. V. Titov and M. Manarov became the first humans to spend in space more than a year. Their mission lasted for 365 days,22 hours and 39 minutes.

The first space tourist, American multimillionaire Dennis Tito, after successful landing in Kazakhstan, May 6th, 2011. He spent almost 8 days in space and visited the International Space Station.

2010-2011. A team of volunteers consisting of three Russians, one Frenchman, Italian and Chinese lived and worked in a closed capsule for 520 days to simulate a journey to Mars.

The Mars-500 team simulated a spacewalk thrice and “returned to Earth”.

The Soviets couldn’t make a decent washing machine, but they could make a pretty darn good space program. Great job.

I hope you get back on track and develop a good successor to the Soyuz capsule. And it was a shame about phobos grunt. It would have been cool to see a landing on phobos.

The Soviet Space program is so much more inspiring because it shows what raw brainpower can do with minimal resources. Western consumers get everything ready made and assume this is the normal state of human existence.

WTH are you talking about? The Soviet space program had the full weight of the Soviet government and industry behind it. It was a matter of national prestige. What minimal resources did they have to make do with and overcome, you know, with their raw brain power? lol

The Red Star awaits you, Russia.

Glorious pictures of a heroic past.
However, Russia’s recent decision not to build a modern large rocket, and the recent failure of interstellar satellite missions and launches don’t bode well for the current generation. There are many larger and more modern rockets and spacecraft being developed around the world and Russia has fallen behind.
The idea of a Russian space tug to transport men and material to and from the moon is a great idea. How this will be possible without a new rocket system remains to be seen.

Check out the Angara and Rus, both being developed by Roscosmos.

Besides, whadya need a new rocket for when you have good old Soyuz! 😉

It’s lovely when we all seeing the past of history about the Space; for a person to be proud, must accomplish some historic issue. The competitions between Soviet Union and USA; the best was the bunch of liars by the greater landed in Nevada Desert by American Astronautics. Was so good; forty four years after; no comments not even commemorated for any years went there. Such competition between the two countries; give lots of credit to the Americans, which today no one wants to talk about. The proved the bunch of liars human beings are; but another will come, why Americans came so reach not long after the end of second would war. Was and still has of a country that made so much money, but money from paper, dollars and the magic dollar bill. Now it’s more dollars around the world, and not so much in United States .But England also made the same, and start before the Americans. Another one will come soon; and maybe the top secret idling for the last forty six years. Why human beings have got the courage of lying so much for so many years. I have to saying Soviet Union did more in the last 50 fifty years than USA did during his birth. Now I wish Russian could grasp and try putted some terrestrials on another planet ASAP.I cannot tell too much about me; even I, many times fill wondering about myself. We all know about evolutions not just on Earth, also on Universe. Changes are frequently; and the Earth is the one which could go very fast into many catastrophes, until disgrace will continue by men made. Ignorance and stupidity too much, only smiling or laughing just to show Agency of Intelligence. The Intellectuals their think have been for too long. A.Oscar

Tito was up there in 2001, not 2010.

Chinese also declared the goal to make a manned expedition to moon.
They actually have quite an ambitious space program of their own.

  9. SMERSH says:

Wow. Cosmonauts on the moon by 2020… only 50 years later than the Americans.

    50. Years.

    • Alkofunker says:

We saw no reason to send humans to the moon after our robots had already examined it before your people allegedly landed there.

      • MCLulz says:

lmao, I love this arguement every time it comes up I get excited. So here’s what you do, get out your little telescope and look at the moon like astronomers have been doing for centuries. Now locate the lander and the american flag, you’ll find it if you know where to look. Not enough proof? Lunar orbiters have snapped thousands of pictures of the landing sites and even been well-enough equipped to show the damn footprints on the surface. Sure all the photos can be doctored but you still have the ability to see the damn thing with your naked eye through a lens. Should have had your robots bring back some rocks with Helium 3 in them like our guys did. You know, the shit that only forms under cosmic rays and years of sitting in dust on the moon? 😛

there is not clue that USA really went to the moon, first the space progran they had, took from the director of the nazy´s V1 and V2, wast so advance like the USSR, the 3 ppl who went to the moom, 2 died in misterious strange ways and the one who survived always said, never asked about the program to the moom….WTF??? the travel when the sun´s radation were too stronge and the spaceship wasnt prepare to that, it could be seen stars on the esenarie…the flag was movin like by a wind….everythin was prepare, how is it possible that after 50 years they didnt come back?? or why can not see by telescope? stop the lie…never none could go to there yet…thats what i belive….nice post
