    Are You Cold This Winter?

Posted on February 15, 2012 by kulichik

In the beginning of February a TPP located in a southern town of Kazakhstan suddenly went wrong. According to the official version, the reason for the accident consisted in severe frosts and old equipment. The news spread around the country fast. Following the visit of Minister of Emergency Situation the situation was improved. However, a dozen of other accidents occurred after that. Nobody reported the Minister about them…

Not only the local TPP but also the entire heating system went wrong. Following the supply of heat, frozen tubes exploded.

The tubes are located underground along the entire territory of the town.

As usual, employees of the emergency service were not ready to handle the case. There has been a leakage of water from the tube in the yard of the private house for 4 days already.

Workers are saying that there are too many accidents and too little equipment. It is impossible to repair all the tubes.

The grapes and pomegranate are covered with bags for winter. But this time there wont’ be any crop here due to water leakage.

The basement of the house was filled with water for several days.

Workers warned the inhabitants that they wouldn’t be able to repair the tubes.

They just stopped the water stream in the basement and left.

People are freezing in their flats. It is -15 degrees Celsius in the streets now.

Women cook with their coats and hats on.

Aliya used to have TB and is scared that because of the cold she will be ill again.

These days all members of her family stay in one room close to the heater.

The 70-years-old pensioner suffers from glaucoma. He says if he had not eye problems he would repair the tubes himself.

There are 326 many-storeyed houses in Kentau and 1500 private ones.

All of them lack any warmth.

    Maria is a preschool teacher.

She has been building the house since 2001.

When the TPP started working the tubes exploded on the first floor. This is the way her kitchen looks now.

A wall destroyed in the hall.

Nobody came to eliminate the consequences of the accident. Maria invited a representative of the city authority to her place.

He promised to reimburse the expenses. He also told them to stay in the house as it wouldn’t get destroyed completely.

They don’t have electricity. Small kids are staying with their relatives. The elder son stayed here to help his mother.

The flat belongs to a future architect. Plumbers arrived in 3 hours after the accident when the ceiling had already fallen down.

The woman, Lidiya, hopes this is her last winter here. Her daughter stays in Ufa and promises to take her live with her.

These people don’t have any warmth or electricity either.

According to the preliminary data, around 450 families are facing the same problem now.

Nobody is saying who is going to reimburse the expenses.

Until 2007 the Kentau TPP was in private ownership and declared bankrupt. The people didn’t have any central heating since the Soviet times. But after the accident the people can’t help remembering the time when they supplied their houses with heat themselves using coal and heaters.

    Location: Kentau

The fact that Kazakhstan was once a Soviet State makes the place relevant. I am curious to see how the former Soviet States have taken care of themselves after they’ve declared independence from Russia.

Are some of these housing projects built from adobe mud brick? The way that the walls have flowed into the rooms under the presence of water like a mud flow is kind of scarey. Rammed earth is pretty strong as long as it stays dry.

Expect to see a sudden peak in births after 9 months. Cold always tightens relations!
