

‘Underground World of Saint Petersburg’ is an exhibition where you will learn how water reaches apartments of Saint Petersburg and where it goes next.

At first, visitors are shown a short imformation movie about the water supply system of the city.

Here, you will find ‘digital aquariums and posters’.


The movie is shown on a large screen with a miniature of Saint Petersburg in front of it.



After the movie, visitors go down to the miniature where a guide tells them about history of the water supply system of Saint Petersburg. The miniature shows the city the way it was 6 years ago.

In the middle, you can the the water tower.






On the left, you can see a full-size water pipe.

People are going inside!


Here, they show water filters used by ‘Vodokanal’. On the right, there is an ultraviolet filter that kills gems and bacteria.

The next room shows how plumbers fix water pipes.

The next room is the basement of a house. Through the ceiling, you can see someone’s bathroom.

This is a full-size sewer. It is located 60 m to 90 m underground and each day they have to remove up to 15 tons of garbage from here.


They tell about water treatment plants.



A local water sprite.

This machine says ‘Soda’ but in fact here you can taste some filtered water from the Neva.

The water is filtered yet they can’t seem to kill the girarda parasite that infects the entire water supply. Drinking this water without boiling it first will have no effect on a native Russian but for a foreigner it will cause a most unpleasant stomach virus.
Cool museum though!
