A terrible catastrophe will happen in the Moscow Metro on December 21, 2012… states the plot of a new Russian movie called “The Metro”. Preparations for shooting lasted for almost a year. The creators studied the work of subway systems, developed new methods of shooting, made unique scenery and found special equipment and locations. Let’s visit the shooting site and see what they have already done.
Several cars bought for shooting were smashed up to different extent in accordance to the plot of the movie.
All inner scenes are shot inside this car. Tunnel views and station interiors will be later laid on the green background with the help of computer.
One of the sets required building an underground bunker. When all scenes had already been shot, the bunker was dismantled.
Many trick scenes are expected to be in the movie.
According to the plot, actions take place in the city center, at fictional Sadovaya Metro Station (marked with one brown circle)
Fictional advertising. “Fly with us!”
An ordinary Moscow Metro map… with one more new station – Sadovaya.
The budget of the movie is $9 million which, by today’s standards, is an impressive sum for Russian cinema.
A badly damaged car and a tunnel in the background.
A life-sized underground tunnel (117 m long) built for shooting.
Made of plywood, cardboard, wooden planks and some clever mixture for tubing, this tunnel looks very natural. It even smells like in the real metro. The scenery of a very high quality! Even though there are still some minor flaws, 99.9% of people won’t notice them.
As you see, there are no rails in the tunnel. They will be added later on computer. It was done so to make the work of the crew and the crowd (it’s about 100 people) easier. But most importantly, the tunnel is sealed and can hold tons of water. During shooting the level can reach up to 1.5 m.
A small piece of the tunnel. Manual work. In total, more than 500 of them were produced.
In one and the same tunnel, a lot of different scenes are shot. That’s why you can see here such incomprehensible from a technical point of view inserts made of different lining.
Inside of a car. Just lately, it has moved along the Moscow Metro and transported passengers.
A damaged car.
And an extremely badly damaged car.
A catastrophe movie was shot in Russia for the last time 25 years ago. It’s called “The Break” (1986) and was shot by the same director which is now shooting “The Metro”, Sergei Astakhov.
The scenery causes delight and respect for the work done.
Close attention to details.
That’s how it looks from the outside.
The models of cars (scale 1:3).
Inside of a model.
The small model of a tunnel.
Very strange feelings when you’re inside.
This tunnel may be flooded up to the very top.
The model of a head car is exactly the same as the real one (which is too somehow used in shooting).
And this is the tail a car disconnected from the car and moved by the flow of water along the tunnel. Computer graphics will give it the final “correct” form.
