Interestingly, deserts are the youngest geological features of Earth’s history. They have paralleled historically with the rise of Homo sapiens. Before us, there were no deserts.

I’d like to see the proof of that theory. In my understanding dessert are normal geographical events caused by the topography of the land. For instance, the adacama desert is formed by the upswell of the Andies and the fact that the prevailing winds loose all their moisture on the windward slope. That leaves a dessicating wind to carry away the moisture on the leeward slope forming a dessert. Also, what was there before the evolution of vegitation? Wouldn’t you surmise that at one point the entire planet was a desert of sorts?

  5. marxistworker says:

Well, I’m just relating what I read, I’m not a scientist… Before vegetation, most paleontologists believe the earth was covered by vast seas and the land was barren but not arid. Through the eons most scientists believe the Earth was jungle-like or in a deep or semi-deep freeze. Deserts, with the characteristics of aridity and erg landscape, have been dated at just a few million years or less, roughly paralleling hominid development.
