A group of students from the New York University were arrested in the USA on suspicion of 3 million dollars theft from American banks and 9.5 million from British ones. Today I succumbed to the power of advertising, and after two weeks of determined avoidance, I confess, in a moment of weakness, to clicking on the ‘Spy vs Spy vs Spy’ promotional video currently at the top of every ER page.

They used a trojan, so right away they are reduced from hackers to coders, and not very good ones at that… trojans are pretty damned simple, no UI, no complex logic, a pretty simple network app. Maybe they should try writing some REAL software.
Next, the delivery mechanism… an email you gotta click on. Yeah, guess they didn’t have the smarts for 0-day exploits or even subverting Proof-of-Concept code.

You’re confusing customers with shareholders. Banks take the former’s money and distribute it to the latter. The idea that they pass losses to their customers implies that, had they not been robbed, they would somehow provide better service or value. This is wrong: they would continue use their millions to speculate, rob and exploit others.
These hackers were no worse or better than the banks themselves.
