This day will become a part of Ukraine history. In Verkhovna Rada happened a mass fight of Ukrainian deputies. The opposition that was trying to prevent Black Sea Fleet contract ratification mounted some attacks that were never crowned with success.

That’s just an ordinary Cossack “Kolo”, the genuine Ukrainian version of democracy practiced since the 16th century.

One of the very first decrees of the Ukrainian parlament was introduction of immunity for themself. A member of parlament was free to commit any crime and police and court had no athority over them. Does anyone know if the law still stands ?

Reminds me of the “debates” in the Taiwan parliament back in the 1990s. Many times the police had to be brought in to divide the factions after the fights and brawls between the factions turned into full on riots.

Still, it is good to see a lively debate in a democracy. Much better than the Australian state and federal parliaments where all they do is hurl veiled insults at each other and behave like school children on a lunch break.

In the United States it is different. It is legal to steal taxpayer dollars and to refuse to debate. When one side refuses to debate they just go into a closed door session and do whatever they want to get the Bill passed. When Bills were sent to Bush for his signature, he just crossed off the parts of the Bil that he disagreed with, and added his signature. This is done without the use of a video camera.

Komrades, good news! Ukraine has returned to it’s senses and given Russia the Black Sea Port lease. Now gas will been turned on, at a discount, and everybody happy. Except for a few foolish independently minded, misguided individuals.
Eventually, we will get them under our thumb again, Georgia next. Now that Bush is gone, Shakasvili is in a panic. oon, we will have our man in Georgia and we will buy their wine.

I remember such a fights in our, Georgian parliament in early 90′s. But there were no smoke grenades, only hand-to-hand, bottle throwing and fight-using-telephones ^^

      Sweet memories :)

Of course everyone came prepared, since that day they were practically discussing if they should be free or “join Russia”. This is not the first time something like this has happened in Ukraine, so everyone knew what they were getting themselves into.

This kind of contract for bases isn’t the first in history, it happened between Estonia and Russia as well in 1939. Basically we signed a mutual helping contract with Russia, that allowed them to keep their military forces in Estonia. Eventually that ended up with annexation, they even didn’t need to attack Estonia, they already had their forces in here. Of course there was the help from Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact which had a secret part about dividing the Europe between Russia and Germany.

Little known fact, Ribbentrop came to Poland and proposed to attack Russia, but we had a non aggression pact at the time so we honoured it (we so shouldn’t have). So what did he do? He went to Russia and proposed the same thing.

Everyone knows what happened after that.
