Except for the first Nuclear power plant in Obninsk you can find another place to see, a gorgeous and really authentic dining hall “Zdorovie” (Health). There you can feel the spirit of the USSR canteens with a modern scent of hot-dogs. But first, let’s go and wash our hands.

In a cloudy solution in one of the soap dishes the restrooms you find a piece of laundry soap. The letters “Г” и “Х”, which usually indicate hot (горячая – goryachya) and cold (холодная – holodnaya) water, here don’t mean anything.

People in uniform stay unattended.

Girls in the dining hall are friendly and affable.

This is “tea”! That was the first time a saw tea with scum!

0610

Bread was the only mouth-watering thing there.

0710

Would you like some dessert, sir?

It’s hot in summer.

After you have picked out the food, you go to the first cash desk and get a receipt, and after that you go the second cash desk and pay the money. On the tables you see a napkin holder with used A4-size paper sheets cut into four pieces. Enjoy your meal!

  1. That’s all because of evil Westerners. They steal recourses from Russia, that’s why Russians have to leave in those miserable living conditions.

Don`t blame others for your bad circumstances and fate.Russians can do good things for their great nation.there is no short cut for prosperity and self reliance.I think Russians has been feel secure in the hands of “big brother” like party or Tsar or authoritarian “democratic” leaders.

    • MlSS lndia says:

OMG Now I know why Russians consider MC Donalds as luxury restaurant :(

  2. Adan says:

Absolutely typical soviet canteen. Food may be horrible, but this one seems nice and tasty.

Poor conditions? That means – no sawdust and spits on the floor like in UK?

    • scot says:

Err… have you been to the UK in a Time Machine to 1702?

Talking of spitting – the UK now teaches new immigrants that it is NOT OK to spit in public.

  3. pimp says:

Only drunk Russians can eat in a place like this.

Our meal looks no so good but it’s taste is delicious and lovely! I’ve been in US and have to say: your food looks better but the taste is terrible like plastic or have no taste

  4. Pasha says:

OMG this is a fine real canteen. Beats any of the American ones any day. At least its real and has character unlike some typical fast food places that lets you stuff your faces with fat and garbage… common people… just because they dont have paper napkins and silver platters does not make it a horrible place. I can guarantee the food there tastes great just like it always has back home… Russia #1

I ate some good sushi in Russia.I ordered a salad in a restaurant and asked for ranch dressing but all they had was mayo.

Anyway Russia is where it is today because of the west!Every day Russia is improving. It looks like many of you have not been to the USA.There are other restaurants besides fast food.

While the USSR was doing its communist thing americans had the freedom to create their businesses and build their empires.

  10. Robolasse says:

Come on, this isn’t so bad (Actually it looks a bit like Finland). I wouldn’t mind eating there. A nice reportage by the way. Let’s get more from the everyday life.

  12. Frank says:

…I’ll take your guys word that the food tastes better than it looks, lol.

It is true most American food is flavorless, that’s why ya gotta eat ethnic food like Mexican, Thai, Greek etc. I think most average white bred Americans like their food undercoked and bland. But go to a place like Texas and eat some BBQ, you Ruskies would love it :)

  13. Rickey Dean says:

In the U.S. we call these Piccadilly’s. They look just the same, down to the “affable” attendants.

  19. Charlie says:

Why does everyone have to turn an article into a country-bashing? If you don’t like Russian food, don’t eat it. Likewise, if you don’t like any other cuisine, don’t eat it. To me the food looks fine. Just like everywhere I have traveled there is good food and there is great food. There are rare times when I have found food that I could or would not eat. As for the surroundings…who cares? As long as you can eat and be satisfied with your meal.
