im so glad someone else said it first, cause i love to look at soldiers in fatigues! i dont know if its cause these men are at their physical peak, the fact that they might die or perhaps just that they seem so masculine, or all three, but i watch the nightly news for more than the reports, you know? mmmm hmmmm, is right.

And what is wrong with flip-flops?! I got four pairs. What else am I supposed to wear on the beach? Would you rather date some smelly chav of some russian “bidlo” in one of those flammable shellsuits and a silly hat that he sleeps in?

I’m sorry Starshii, do you not consider Chechens to be Russia? What, just because most of them happen to be Muslim, they automatically lose the right to be a Russian citizen?

I really don’t understand your trail of thought, Starshii. Perhaps if you move to one of the Baltic States, you will find more understanding there. There is certainly no shortage of Rasim and Xenophobia in Latvia and Estonia. So, I believe you will fit in quite well.

Funny. Seems most of the Chechens fought extremely hard to avoid the dubious honor of “right to be a Russian citizen”. Russian Sondercommando had to kill hundreds of thousands of them to prove how wrong they are.

Alas, you, on opposite, seem to consider “to be Russia” any place under the Sun where boot of a Russian soldier has ever treaded upon. “Russian once – Russian forever”, eh? “Or else…”.

            :)

“Most”?! WTF are you talking about. “Most” Chechens have been fighting? I don’t think so. Civilians haven’t, and pro-Moscow guys like to kiss Putin’s ass too much.

It is recognized in Russia (in theory, at least) that Chechen civilians are citizens of Russia, and should be protected against crimes. And so, some Russian soldiers who commited crimes have actually been convicted of them (like this guy Budanov). Not saying that this always happens, it’s a messy thing, but it does happen sometimes.

The ones gathered in a clump around the campfire, with the smoke signal, in the big open field? They are making it too easy. Even without range/sighting equipment, one test round, then maximum of two bracketing adjustments left/right or up/down, and THEY will be the cooked meat around that fire.

That’s one of the reasons I don’t think these are propaganda photos, unless the Russian Army needs them to reassure mothers of conscripts that their sons are having camping trips in Chechnya, or wherever they are.

I still like the photos though.

            1) I am not Nazi
            2) I am not your friend

As of the topic, I am afraid that this is what Russians might be up to eventually. Too many similarities to the past (1930-40ies). But that is just hypothetical…

Sorry, but it’s just sad to look at those pictures.
People killing other people because of some other people in Kremlin telling them to do it.
And feeling theirselves heroes at the same time. No critical thought, no wondering, just plain old blind DUTY to do something. And this something is taking other people’s lives because of some “reason”. And being proud of it.
It is not normal and it has never been normal. It just a very very bad side of humanity. Not asking questions, just doing the DUTY. It is just a very elaborate means of brainwashing. I hope humans will overcome this medieval way of thinking. Every one of them, including every one, who reads this text, and children of you.
      Wake up, humanity.

I don’t disagree that some wars are unnecessary, or driven by all the wrong reasons. However, the idea that anyone who adheres to a sense of “duty” in life is “medieval” sounds like an excuse to stand aside and let every injustice go uncorrected. After all, if there is no duty to do right, then why get involved? I think the world had a duty to stop Nazi Germany before they did, but even in the 1930s the world thought it was too modern, too sophisticated, for war. After all–we had already had the “war to end all wars,” right?

Would you call someone who, out of a sense of duty, risks their life to save you from a fire, accident, etc. “medievel”? Probably not, because that would be a situation in which your own self-interest would come up against all your pious platitudes about non-thinking people who perform their duty.

        Wake up, yourself.

I am not opposed to you. Individual courage is a very good thing. As it is duty, when done (and managed from government) correctly. By the way, war in Chechenia is highly controversial and that’s why I had those feelings looking at those pictures. I don’t have a feeling that these soldiers know, what they really are doing, being puppets in Putin’s hands and blinded by carefully planted “call of fatherland”.
I was just being emotional. What I wanted to say, was that I just hope (or more precise, believe) that some day humanity will be in first place on people’s minds. When our level of living, not only in Western world, but also in whole other world will be high enough and science will be so advanced that there will be no wars for resources. When education level in world will be so high, that there will be no xenophobia, no hate and no violence. Zero violence. Physical for start and maybe even no mental violence. I believe that it is attainable and that humans will get to it.
I don’t know how we will get this far, but I believe we will. And then we will look back at 2000s and say “our civilization now differs from civilization in 2000s as much as they were different from medieval times”.
Because who knows, what beliefs, what wrong beliefs are now entrenched in our minds, just because world is built as it is now. Maybe in some sense we are still witchhunters of medieval times.

Those guys occupied national territory of chechens, so they prevented one nation using their right to state their independence. People who have been living in their territory for thousands of years have been forcefully incorporated against their will to imperium. Horrible terror was used by big government and this was unacceptable. When Russia had not involved before First war in there when Dudajev and other toughtful leaders were still alive – then Chechenya could have been changed to civilized country, but now its doomed.

Russian imperialism comes from mongols – first Russian czars were sons of mongolian tax collectors. One of them – Ivan VI the Terrible – destroyed democratic seeds in Russia in Novgorod and Pskov. And left over has no respect to others and just has desire to conquer. There are good Russians, many good Russians, but unfortunately they are not able to change direction were Russia is moving.

        > Why is that soldier using “5 color CAMMO face-paint” on his face?

Why not? Is it forbidden or considered inhumane? :D Or maybe you think he should use this paint not on his face but on something else — his boots or butt, for example? :D

The idea of the question I guess was why he is not using Russian paint.

Does that make your facial skin peel off?

Or Russians do not produce such a paint at all and use animal dung instead (as featured in the movie “Russian National Hunt”)?

              Sure. Why not.

Only you seem to be unfamiliar with the Russian keenness for everything “otechestvennoe” (made-in-Fatherland). They are extremely proud of anything they have been able to produce by themselves, even if it is of inferior quality than imported. Overcompensation.

Besides, USA is an arch-enemy of the modern Russia just as it was for USSR. This adds to the comical twist.

In short, you need to know the background to get the joke.

One other small possibility–there have been numerous joint-training exercises between Russian and NATO forces, including US forces.

During exercises like that, soldiers always look for items to trade, so they can test each other’s equipment or gather souvenirs. The Russian soldier above may have done that.

Most of those exercises are on a small level and do not become news events like the large-scale exercise this past summer between Russian and Chinese forces, or even the smaller Russian-German joint airborne exercise.

                otechestvennoe… :)

That’s a joke. Almost everything one buys in a Russian shop nowadays is imported. Washing machines, refrigerators, cooking stoves, vacuum cleaners… And look at the countries leaders and their means of transportation: I never saw Putin drive a Lada… Mercedes and BMW all the way.

The AK-47 is unparalleled, Kamaz is great [though excessively polluting] and maybe some other things, but in general… no.

            > The idea of the question I guess was why he is not using Russian paint.

Probably because he wanted to use American one, i guess :) What’s the problem?
But where did that soldier get this paint is another question. Maybe he traded it or took as a trophy or something. — Paint is paint, not a rarity.

            > Or Russians do not produce such a paint at all…

Who told you that? :D And you believe him? OMG…

            >and use animal dung instead (as featured in the movie “Russian National Hunt”)?

Aha, also there was an episode when Earth was in the night skies instead of Moon. :D
            So what? It’s a comedy.

Maybe it was tested on animals? Seriously doubt though that many russians give a rats ass about it.

If you are one, you are possibly 5 years of age. So get off the computer. This is for adults.

Their grand-fathers fought in the Great Patriotic War; their fathers in other wars, and now it is their turn.
They didn’t choose where or when, but they serve their country faithfully and honourably. I salute them.

I know it will make many angry, but I have no problem with the Russian Army dealing with the fascist and terrorist muslims. If muslims would choose to live in peace then all would be well, but they did not choose to do so and were punished. I have seen video of what the Chechens do to Russians they capture. A quick dose from the Kalash and away they go.

Bullied Russian soldier dies in hospital
      13 Feb 2008 14:56:53 GMT
      Source: Reuters
      By Dmitry Solovyov

MOSCOW, Feb 13 (Reuters) – A Russian conscript severely beaten by a fellow soldier 13 months ago died in hospital on Wednesday, drawing attention to widespread hazing in the Russian army.

Roman Rudakov’s case hit headlines last year and embarrassed Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov, then widely rumoured to be on a short list of candidates to succeed President Vladimir Putin when he steps down later this year.

The soldier who beat Rudakov was given a three-year suspended sentence. The court agreed with prosecutors that Rudakov’s health deteriorated sharply because of an undiagnosed blood disease, not because of the beating.

Russian media said Rudakov had been awaiting an intestine transplant when he died in Moscow’s Burdenko Military Hospital.

Tatyana Znachkova, chairwoman of campaign group The Soldiers’ Mothers’ Committee, said Rudakov’s death was a small part of a grim picture of poor army discipline.

“Nowadays, in peaceful times, between 3,000 and 3,500 Russian soldiers die each year, according to our estimates,” she told Reuters. “This includes various accidents and suicides.”

Particularly worrying and deep-rooted is hazing — bullying of conscripts by older soldiers, dating back to Soviet days.

“We have been dealing with this problem for 15 years, trying to eradicate hazing, but such cases are only getting more and more numerous,” Znachkova said.

“How can you possibly put an end to this if those children coming to serve in the army happily kick each other in the face or smash testicles, or cripple or hang one another?”

Rampant crime and a shortage of conscripts often push draft officers to enroll recently freed convicts.

“Five or seven years ago my hair stood on end when I learned that even in such a division as Dzerzhinsky they can enroll those with criminal records,” Znachkova said, referring to an elite Interior Ministry unit deployed outside Moscow.

The rapid rise of social inequality in modern Russia means that badly educated children from poor families are often drafted, while richer families dodge service in the army.

Russia is trying to create a modern, mobile army of professionals who sign contracts with the Defence Ministry and are eager to serve long terms for good pay.

Znachkova said a disciplined, professional Russian army was a dream. “Nothing will change — our committee is already getting complaints that a contract soldier who joined the army half a year earlier is taking a younger soldier’s pay.”

“Hazing is like a perpetual motion machine, and the general moral degradation of society is what keeps it running.” (Reporting by Dmitry Solovyov; Editing by Tim Pearce)
