This happened 10 days ago, 19th of March, 2007 in Siberian city Noviy Urengoy. The gas pipeline 5 feet in diameter exploded.

This photo was made from the distance of 7 miles from the actual explosion place.

This is 5 miles from the disaster place.

It’s 4.00am but it’s not dark anymore. The rain of gray ashes started.

The fire is 1000 feet tall!

It’s not dark at all now.

And now in 5.00am, in the middle of Siberian winter (temperature is far below zero) rain has started!!!
Now on the site of the explosion there is a giant swamp-lake as a result of this disaster, surrounded by miles of frozen winter forests of Siberia.
No mention of this event was shown on Russian mass media. Some say that’s because of prohibition from GAZPROM, Russian gas monopolist.

It because at that time all news were filled with the news from the tragedy in the coal mine with victims.
Plus the 10 people squashed to death in a Moscow strip club recently. There was a fire but no-one thought of using the extinguishers but started running and panicking. Ten killed.
Two words: carbon monoxide.
Amazing.
That’s not a gas explosion, it’s a regular households supply of vodka being lit after the father passed out with a ciggarette in his mouth.
This was on TV in Chisinau.
Awesome post. I thought Id note that these pics showed up in my Google Reader where I subscribe to your blog. Most of the time the pics you post dont show up there and I have to go to the original post but these did. Just fyi.
Thanks for the great blog.
Beautiful Pictures, well in a depressing way I suppose.
